At her age, the 90-year old designer is still innovating and coming up with designs. The latest project she has embarked on is coming up with a handbag collection that she’s dubbed as Extinctions. These handbags are made of, what else, but exotic materials like Mongolian lamb, but the pieces go for more affordable prices between $250 to $650. The pieces also come in big sizes, as the designer is not a fan of small, pouchette types.

From an interview with the New York Times:

Well, I’ve been making handbags myself for many, many years because we were in the fabric business, but top, top of the market. I was always looking for beautiful antique fabrics and unusual vintage fabrics, and I’ve made handbags over the years. Every time I travel, I always look for craftspeople to make shoes and bags. I’m an accessory freak, I love all kinds of stuff. I never thought I would do anything commercial, but at 90 years old, an old bag is starting a new career.

Anyway, I came across this gorgeous camera bag that I thought was too pretty and delicate for any use at all. This is the kind of bag that would be better off put on display, as it is too small to use for anything else, except the gadget it was made for.

That it comes in green and cream leather makes it dainty and summer-worthy. Most camera bags come in the basic color — black.

The plastic with silver-toned metal chain link emphasizes this bag’s retro chic-ness. I think I love the chains the most. Inside, the bag is lined with suede in the color of burnt orange.

The concept behind this is from Chay Su and Rika Lin who are both from Taipei. These handbag designers set up their brand in 2010, producing eight pieces that are perfect for today’s gadget-addicted consumers. These are mostly laptop bags, which can fit gadgets 13 inches wide and above. But if not used for gadgets, these bags can also be great for everyday wearing.

These handbags are lifted from paper, hence the name. But these are functional totes that cost anywhere from $50 to $100.

First distributed just locally, JumpFromPaper is now expanding to HongKong, Malaysia, Singapore and Europe.

The brand names this particular handbag as the Flicker Scout and I prefer the green one over the black. Flicker Scout is made from patent leather. It also has a crackled metallic patent cowhide version for its white and gold sets. But I really am partial to this set.

The price increase shouldn’t come as a surprise. The company does this almost annually though, and so do other brands like Chanel, Gucci or Hermes. The economics of it is unavoidable. But the increase is also a bit lower than other luxury brands in the last few months.

So, if you’re coveting that latest Louis Vuitton bag from the Sophia Coppola line, or simply want to purchase the classic Neverfull, you’ve got about four-five days to do it, before the prices go slightly higher.

Owning this gorgeous Birkin from Hermes is already a privilege for bagistas and fashion savants. The bag itself is a treasure. I’m sure most people would agree with that. Not many people can have it, and those who have it should be so lucky.

Kelly Rutherford, who plays Lily Van Der Woodsen on the fashionable drama series, is putting her Birkin up for auction at Heritage Auctions. According to the designer, his handbags are going to be investment and classic pieces that is meant to be used over and over, transcending different styles and trends.

The idea of selling this limitedly online brings “real excitement.” And since his pieces are actually marked down, he predicts it’s going to drive handbag lovers crazy. The pieces do have something distinct about them, and they are pretty handbags, no doubt!

From the Wall Street Journal fashion section:

Gilt will feature four main styles from the collection, the Carla, an envelope clutch that comes in cobalt blue suede and colorblocked snakeskin among other colors and materials; the Kate, a clutch made of leopard print pony hair; and the Thedora and Iside, both miniaudiere hardcases made out of inlayed enamel.

The Boy Chanel Collection offers something different to loyal fans of the brand. It’s bolder. But the aesthetics is still unmistakably Chanel. These handbags are to be worn as cross-body pieces or shoulder bags. The collection actually takes inspiration from old handbags that hunters wore to put their things in, like a cartridge. Coming in three sizes, with the largest one looking like a tote bag, the pieces are made in distinct colors — red, black, green and ivory.

The handbags will debut at stores this coming August with a price range of $2500 – $4300.

My latest find are from Icon Handbags, whose latest line for its Spring 2012 just makes my heart sing! Take a look at some of their choices:

I like the artistic touch incorporated in these bags. They are a mix of classic and contemporary and reminds me of Art Nouveau pieces (thus the name Icon).

Many of these handbags are made from top-grain leather and the printing don’t come off, as they are bonded to the leather using a revolutionary process. These handbags have loads of character in them, like art, it’s a conversation piece.

This new Willis look, however, seems to have taken note of these common observations for Coach, transforming a handbag design that originate almost twenty years ago. The original handbag design is the image to the right.

While it retains much of what the Willis originally looks like, the rounded corners gives it a contemporary edge. What’s more, I actually like that this handbag comes in lovely colors like sunflower (as pictured), vermillion (a kind of red), and navy.

Her name is AnnaSophia Robb. And she is set to play the young Carrie Bradshaw, a role that made Sarah Jessica Parker a fashion icon during the time “Sex and the City” was running on the air.

The strap drops just right below the shoulder, and is very comfortable to carry around. This handbag also comes in bright orange combo, and a classic black and taupe or blue and taupe mix.

The orange and tan handbag is from Prada. The entire bag’s frame is made of canvas, while the orange trims and the handles are al in leather. The inside has a black monogram lining, with additiona zipped-pockets for storage.

The gray and black combo is a Nordstrom exclusive, which also comes in a variety of designs and materials. This particular piece has a lizard-embossed texture, but there is also a model made from patented leather. This Halogen Everday Tote is an open-top bag.

Three Great Totes for Color Blocking

This particular piece, for instance, is nautical inspired, with its blue stripes. The handbag is made of faux patent leather with contrast trims, and the inside of the bag is made with cotton and polyester material. The only thing I wish the handbag would have is bigger space, as this is quite “thin” with a dimension of 4.75 inches only. There are three extra pockets, however, which makes up for the lack of space.

It’s elegant in black, and feminine with its chain handles and bows. This handbag is made from faux patent leather with a smokey metal chain.

Inside, the interior is roomy with three extra pockets and a center zipped compartment. The bag is also featured with metal feet in the bottom.

All in all? A really good buy for a great price!

But, who says this season have to be all about bright colors? Which is why, I’m really liking this Stepney Tote from Alexander McQueen.

The bag features just a hint of brightness, colors and neon on it. But the overall, it stands out because of the cool navy neoprene material.

That it’s made in neoprene also makes this handbag even more fitted for summer wearing. The material can withstand a warm beach climate and sandy environment. The size and shape of the handbag can also double as a gym bag, a travel bag or a beach bag. I dare say, this can even replace the Longchamp Le Pliage I’ve been carrying around.

This pieces is what I would usually find as more of a part of a fall or winter ensemble. However, Lanvin is bringing this for spring, and I think that it is going to be a lovely addition to a woman’s wardrobe.

The handbag is light, made of textile in a gold and black jewel printout. It comes with a double leather carry handle and a press stud closure. Easy access, roomy and easy to carry around. Inside, the handbag is covered in black lining.

Lanvin’s Jewel Print Tote

Made of geniune leather, the closure is actually a magnetic clasp and the inside is lined with printed twill. Color selections for this collection include red, teal and mustard — all so right for the season!

Inside, the handbag is pretty compact and since this size is small at 7 1/2″H x 9″W x 2 1/2″D, it fits just enough of your necessities and is not exactly bulky. Those bigger schoolboy satchels, such as the Cambride Satchel, can look heavy, especially the 15-inches types. I think that this Rebecca Minkoff 9-inches piece is just about right. Cute, but edgy and colorful.

And the fact that for every purchase of this helps a cooperative of women in Bangladesh, makes it even all worth it.

This bag is made with natural jute fiber from Bangladesh (but finished in California). It’s reusable, with a waterproof lining. The straps are leather, natural vegetable-dyed at that, and the rivets are antique nickel.

The Apolis Market Bag

This bowling bag, one that is Star Wars inspired, is so cute and stylish, that it quickly flew off the shelves and sold out. Who knew there would be lot of Star Wars fan who are rather trendy, too?

This handbag has caricatures of iconic Star Wars character like Yoda, R2-D2, C-3PO, Chewbacca, Han Solo, Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia. And perhaps, so as not to look totally geeky, it is also designed with a turquose glittered vinyl trim, which adds more drama and color to the piece.

The inside is roomy, with a pouch pocket for extra space.

This piece is priced at $34 only, which would have been really cool to own, except it looks like Hottopic is currently out of this online exclusive.

Star Wars Bowling Bag

Although this has been released a year or so ago (but the lates color selections are new), The Smith holds a classic style that transcends trends.

I love that this handbag is quite roomy, too. And it comes with a longer strap, which makes it easier to carry around. The strap is long enough to carry by the shoulders, but not to far stretch that you can’t hold it or hang it by the hand.

I could do without the tassels, though. But I do get that it adds a touch of style.

What do you think? At almost $400, this handbag may be well above the average price range for a Dooney & Burke. But the craftsmanship this handbag exhibits more than justifies the cost, I guess.

The handbag features a cat’s face, with eyes, ears, nose and all. It’s detailed with gold and velvet, which I think adds a hint of sophistication to it. But overall, I just really like how cute it is! I can picture this bag going with a lovely flowing skirt and blouse ensemble.

Sometimes, dressing up with a little quirk can go so wrong so quickly, though. But I think this bag can go with anything. It probably even works with business suits.
